Bullying Prevention Awareness Month!

Bullying Prevention Awareness Month

A statement by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius
October is Bullying Prevention Awareness Month - when individuals, families, schools, and communities across the nation help to raise awareness about bullying prevention. Bullying remains a widespread problem with nearly 30 percent of adolescents in the U.S. reporting some experience with bullying, whether as the victim, the bully or both. An infographic developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) highlights important facts and information about bullying prevention. We know that there are a number of emotional effects that can result from bullying such as depression and anxiety. There are also physical effects as well, like headaches and stomachaches, and sleep problems. In a special supplement of the Journal of Adolescent Health supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) we see how researchers continue to investigate the complex relationship between bullying and suicide.
But help is available. I am very pleased to highlight a number of exciting activities and initiatives that HHS will be launching during Bullying Prevention Awareness Month.
  • Media Guidelines for Bullying Prevention. Media coverage of social issues can have a widespread impact on how communities understand and address problems. SAMHSA has developed media guidelines conveniently located in the newsroom of stopbullying.gov. This guidance offers help to journalists, bloggers, and others to engage in responsible reporting on this important topic.
  • Conversation Starters Mobile App. Later this month, SAMHSA will release a mobile app for parents to help start conversations with their children about bullying. This app will be available for both Android and Apple platforms.
  • Bullying Prevention Training Center. This revamped section of stopbullying.gov provides a one-stop-shop for training materials for educators and community leaders. These new materials, developed by HRSA, will be available in late October in our training section on stopbullying.gov.
Successful bullying prevention can’t happen alone! We work closely with the Departments of Education, Justice, and Agriculture, and others, through the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention; including supporting stopbullying.gov, which continues to be an excellent resource for bullying prevention information.
  • We are collaborating with these offices to support youth engagement. Across the country, youth are encouraged to talk about bullying by organizing bullying prevention social and educational events through youth organizations in their communities. Youth can report back on these activities through our Tumblr page.
  • The Department of Education has issued guidance in the form of a Dear Colleague letter that provides an overview of school districts’ responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to address bullying of students with disabilities.
With all of these resources available, it’s a great time to consider how you can help raise awareness about bullying and take action to stop it. Find out the latest policies and laws that are in your state. Teens can find inspiration by visiting our Tumblr site. Tell us what you are going to do by engaging on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. And follow along with Bullying Prevention Awareness Month Activities at #StopBullying13.

From the Ardmore PTA President

Welcome to a new school year!  My name is Ta Tanisha Baker, and I’m the new Ardmore PTA President.  This year, the PTA surveyed the teachers to understand how the PTA can help them better serve our children.  Many teachers requested more volunteers in the school, so in response, I am introducing my 10-10-10 plan:  10 volunteers, 10 hours a month for 10 months.  If you have time during the week to assist in the classrooms, or monitor the lunch/recess hour, then we need to hear from you.

In addition to recruiting volunteers, we have set the following fundraising goals which include 6 color Laser Jet printers, 500 reams of paper, 5 scholarships to North Bay Adventure camp and $50.00 Staples/Office Depot cards for the
teachers.  To reach these goals, the PTA will host 3 major fundraisers, our annual Fish Fry, Kids Night Out (Double-Feature movie night) and a Family Comedy Night/Silent Auction.

For our family events, the PTA will offer Rita’s Italian Ice at the kick-off PTA meeting in September, and an Ice Cream Social/Game Night in October, and Spirit Nights at local restaurants throughout the school year.  Also, at each PTA meeting, we’ll be presenting ‘Student of the Month’ awards.  Every month, a student from each class will be selected as the Student of the Month.  Students will be selected by the Ardmore teachers.

In closing, to improve our communication with parents, we’ll provide the option of receiving Text Message reminders on your smart phone.  To join, TEXT @385a to 301-805-6848 to keep up to date on Ardmore PTA events, meetings and breaking school news.  We’ll also continue providing traditional flyers as well.

Box Tops for Education

Get your Box Tops Ready!  They are due March 1st.  Contact Bertina Bates for questions.

Checks will be made payable to the designated, active school, however they can be made payable to a school PTA/PTO if specifically requested by the school upon enrollment. Payments made to schools are not tax-deductible by schools, participants or purchasers. Payments will be made twice each school year, on or about December 15th and on or about April 15th. Each payment will include amounts earned by schools from the Clip program, eBoxTops credits, Bonus eBoxTops credits and Bonus Box Tops. The December 15th payment will reflect the amounts confirmed from March 2nd through the following November 1st, and the April 15th payment will reflect the amounts confirmed from November 2nd through March 1st. Schools that accrue total earnings of less than $20.00 from March 2nd through the following November 1st will not be issued a December 15th payment. Instead, those earnings will carry over and a payment will be issued for the entire school year to those schools in the April 15th payment. Allow 2 to 4 weeks for checks to arrive. If a school fails to cash any Box Tops for Education program check within 18 months of issuance, then the school shall forfeit its right to receive such payment. Active status in the Box Tops for Education program, and entitlement to any earnings, is conditioned upon the school cashing all earnings checks within 18 months of issuance. General Mills imposes this condition because of the time and cost associated with administering uncashed program payments for extended periods of time. General Mills will not replace checks requested more than 18 months after the original check was issued. Proof of Delivery and a valid copy of your online submission form will be required in order to research any discrepancies or payment disputes. For further information, please refer to the FAQs posted onhttp://www.boxtops4education.com.

Rules for Clipping Box Tops

Collect, Send and Earn

Clip physical Box Tops from hundreds of purchased participating products. Send your collected Box Tops to an enrolled school of your choice. Your school coordinator will submit collected Box Tops using a completed online submission form with its unique barcode to General Mills for processing and verification. Each valid Box Tops is worth 10 cents to each enrolled and active school if the Box Tops is properly submitted in accordance with these Official Rules.

Qualifying Box Tops

Qualifying Box Tops can be found on packages of participating General Mills products and various partner brands. Qualifying products are subject to change. For a complete list of participating products visithttp://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/clip/Brands.aspx.

Redemptions and Program Deadline

To redeem qualifying Box Tops for cash for a designated school, a school coordinator must complete an official Box Tops Submission Form online for each separate shipment, print out the form and include it with the shipment of qualifying Box Tops. For clarity, a print out of each separate completed online submission form with its unique barcode must be included in each submission package. Box Tops should be submitted in bundles of 50 Box Tops and Bonus Box Tops certificates must be kept in separate bundles. Submissions must be postmarked by November 1st for earnings to be included on December 15th checks and by March 1st to be included on April 15th checks. All submissions are subject to verification.
